Freelancer Profile : Antoine Bernier

Posted on April 13, 2021

Antoine's youthful curiosity drove him to learn web technologies when he was still a high school student. He went on to excel in his field and turned to freelancing to reap the benefits of freedom on the job, benefit from security and find interesting and regular assignments. Now 38 years-old Antoine has joined Comet’s freelance community and recently completed a mission at  L'Oréal as a full-stack developer. His own thirst for education, inspired him to become a trainer at the Ironhack School of Tech. "For me, pedagogy is like going back over the pencil lines that allowed me to sketch things that I have understood over the years". To teach, you have to learn, which is why Comet encourages and facilitates upskilling for its community.

On being Freelance

« At first, it wasn't really a choice in itself, but more of an opportunity. I had come to live in Paris to follow a course in computer science and maths at university. A friend of mine who I had met on IRC (the ancestor of Slack) and who had a DVD authoring box, told me about one of his clients who needed a web solution. I didn't know much about the web at the time… but I taught myself, as I still do today. Then over time I became a freelance because I really like the freedom that this status brings me. »

On keeping competitive

« As a freelancer, I generally have a great deal of autonomy in my assignments, which allows me to carry out the work in the most efficient way for me. I shouldn't be talking about it because it's a secret lol. Seriously, I read all the official documentation: specifications, manuals, READMEs. And the second source of extraordinary content that I use without moderation is none other than Youtube. »

Additional projects

« In addition to my freelance activity, I am a trainer in the Ironhack.com tech-school which trains digital professions: webdev / UX / Data / Cyber-security. Learning and teaching interest me a lot: for me, it's like going back over the pencil strokes that allowed me to sketch things that I have understood over the years, in order to transmit them better and more effectively. »

« I find great missions, serious, well selected and interesting and the transparency of the freelance selection process in real time is really top notch. Comet account managers take care of  the customer relationship with regard to commercial aspects so it allows me to concentrate and devote myself fully to my work. To sum up, the main advantages are: a wide choice of missions, less prospecting effort and invoicing based on time spent on a mission. »
